Masters Presentation – Why the unchallenged ideas of addiction affect disability studies and activism
While I was doing research for my major paper I had to show that addiction and disability were connected. While doing this I began to think about how putting addiction and disability under the same heading could be a problem.
This problem really stems from the stigmas that are connected to both areas. Addiction has had a harder time addressing the stigma connected to it. While disability has had some success in ridding certain stigmas.
What will happen as there two areas are joined?
This presentation suggested that the joining of addiction and disability could help both fields over all, but to do so without a critical view of the process has the potential to harm addiction and disability.
